Fix 1: Are You Using A Public Network?

If you are using a public network such as a cafe, hotel, school, etc then our advice will be for you to connect over your mobile hotspot because it’s possible that the network administrator has put some restrictions and this is causing issues. 

Note: But in case you are using a private network then you can follow the below given solutions.


Fix 2: Check If Your Wii U Has Pending System Update

First check if your Wii U is up to date, to check the update for the Wii U follow the below given instructions. 

  • Go to the Wii U Menu
  • Then choose System Settings.
  • Then go to the right section and choose System Update.
  • If your system is up to date then it will tell you that, otherwise it will tell you the new version which you need to update.
  • If there is an update then keep the Wii U GamePad plugged in while your system is updating as it may take a while.

Fix 3: Connection Test

  • Go to the Wii U Menu.
  • Then go to System Settings.
  • Then select the Internet icon, and press the A button to confirm.
  • Then choose Connect To the Internet.
  • Then choose Connection List.
  • Then choose your Internet Connection.
  • Then choose Connection Test.
  • Now wait till the connection test completes.
  • If the connection test result shows any issue then check if it can be fixed.
  • If you need help then you can contact the Nintendo support. In that case check in the bottom-right corner of the screen, if there you can see a Support Code, then take note of it.

Fix 4: Try Enabling DMZ (Demilitarised Zone)

Note: Before activating the DMZ mode on your Wii U system, please ensure that you have manually assigned an IP address.

  • Access your Router Settings.
  • Locate the “DMZ” or “Demilitarized Zone” feature, which can usually be found under sections such as Security, Application, Firewall, or Gaming, depending on your router’s configuration.
  • Enable the DMZ feature following the instructions provided by your internet service provider.
  • Then enter the IP address of your Wii U system.
  • Save the changes by applying them.
  • Test your online connectivity and check if the error persists.

Please Note: It may take a short while for the DMZ settings to take effect.


Fix 5: Port Forwarding

Note: Before activating the DMZ mode on your Wii U system, please ensure that you have manually assigned an IP address.

  • Access your Router Settings.
  • Then look for the “Port Forwarding” functionality, which may be located under sections like Security, Application, Firewall, or Gaming, depending on the specific router model.
  • Input the necessary details:
    • [Ports] 442 – 445 and 28000 – 29500
    • [UDP] Grant permission for traffic to all addresses. This step is crucial for establishing peer-to-peer connections during gameplay (Ports 1 – 65000).
  • Specify the IP address of your Wii U system.
  • Save and implement the modifications.
  • Then check if the error continues.

Fix 7: Contact Your ISP

If you feel any issues with the above given steps then you can connect with your ISP and report the issue you are having. Some users in the online communities have shared that contacting their ISP was the only resort for them.
